Managing Your Spirit Guides

There are times when we are so open to intuitive guidance and inspiration, so connected to our Spirit Guides, that we are subjected to a practically limitless, constant flow of information. Ideas abound. No sooner do we finish one project than we are inspired with three new possibilities to take its place! It seems like ten different avenues to be traveled present themselves at once - and we want to travel all of them. We feel overwhelmed and exhausted. How can we ever accomplish all that? Don’t our Spirit Guides know that there is simply not enough time in the day to do all that?
Actually, they don’t.
Once we are open to the flow of information from our Spirit Guides, we have to understand the perspective from which their guidance is given. On the spiritual plane, time does not exist. Time is a third-dimensional organizational construct that allows us the illusion of linear progression from choice to consequence. Linear time is an essential part of our learning experience here in this physical incarnation. But it is not a construct to which our Spirit Guides adhere. Similarly, energy moves at the speed of intent on the spiritual plane - maybe even “faster,” given that time does not exist and so neither does the concept of speed. By comparison, moving energy by taking action here on the physical plane is a ponderous process. Moving physical matter takes a great deal of work when you compare it to the ease of shifting pure energy. Not only that, but information is immediately available on the spiritual plane, also. In the physical, on the other hand, we have to learn new skills, do research, and educate ourselves before we can take informed and effective action. Oh, and on the spiritual plane, money does not exist! As you can see, our Spirit Guides come from a very different frame of reference when they offer us information.
When we are in intuitive information overload, we have to remember that our job is to manage the guidance we receive in order to express it coherently at the physical level. Our Spirit Guides are a tremendous source of information. But we are in charge of putting that information into workable, practical application. From time to time, this means setting appropriate boundaries and guidelines.
If you feel yourself bombarded with far more inspiration than you could possibly act upon, it’s time to manage the information flow more appropriately. Your Spirit Guides will be highly receptive to this process - they want to assist you in the way that serves you best.
Here are a couple of ways you might do this:
Ask to be inspired with guidance as you are available to act upon the information. To me, this looks a little bit like this: “Tomorrow morning, I have time to either write a blog post, or revise the home page of my website (these, by the way, were truly the most pressing items I felt drawn to yesterday). Depending on which project is more in alignment with my highest good and intended outcome, please inspire me tomorrow morning when I wake up with a post topic/website copy and let me know which project to attend to first. Thank you!” Since you’re reading this, you know the answer I received!
Tell them exactly what you need to get the job done. For example: “It is my intent to complete this project, but in order to do this I need people to show up in my life who have the following expertise: …. Thank you!” Or “I know it would serve me to attend this class/workshop/event, but in order to do so, I need $xxx to come into my life by next week. Thank you!”
Remind your Spirit Guides that you operate within linear time. If you want anyone do to something for you - your spouse, your co-worker - don’t you specify a time frame? What if they had no concept of time? Even my two-year-old sometimes needs to be reminded that everything takes time here in the physical - and she’s been here for a while now. Your Spirit Guides and Higher Self need to know what frame of reference you are using. So take a moment to communicate the intent that all requests to them will be made within the “Now Time Line.”
Delegate, delegate, delegate. It’s not your job to figure everything out yourself. If you do not know how to get from where you are now to where you are inspired to go, put your Spirit Guides to work! If you have no idea where your resources are going to come from in order to move towards your goals, let your Spirit Guides know! If you are given a next step but your situation does not currently seem to allow you to take that step, delegate this issue rather than trying to make it all happen yourself.
Imagine having a staff or team to assist you at all times. Would you want your team to simply assume what you want and need, based on their own frame of reference? Or would you work together to “get on the same page?” What would be a more satisfying work environment for your team?
You are the manager of your resources on the spiritual plane. You will be stunned at how much your Spirit Guides can accomplish on your behalf as long as you ask for what you want, when you want it. These amazing, unconditionally loving beings are here to serve you to the best of their ability. Make their job a little easier by being a good team leader!

You’re so very welcome (for the review)!
About these tips for working with spirit guides — I’m so glad to see you use the verbs TELL, REMIND, and DELEGATE — in addition to ASKing.
This is so important. They’re your guides, you’re in charge — they work for you, not the other way around. You are the authority, the leader, and they are not omnipotent.
It’s so much easier for them to present you with information in a variety of forms — synchronicities abound — than it is for them to give you a fully-formed plan of attack that you can understand with absolute clarity.
Thank you for digging in to these powerful subtleties…
Wow! Talk about synchronicities Slade. As I was reading this blog my printer was printing out a letter I had just written. It was addressed to my personal team of Guides, Teachers and Angels. In the letter I told then how grateful I am to have them all on my team.
I went on to TELL them in some detail what I feel OUR most important task is in respect to spiritual growth. I then went on to explain in great detail my short term income needs and my longer term needs as well. I was very specific about timelines in linear time. But I TOLD the the how is up to them within certain detailed parameters.
In the middle of writing this response my phone rings and it’s my best friend (and your student Andrea) asking me if I had read your blog yet. It seems that before he read it he had just finished having a long talk with his guide team. He said he had realized that he was doing to much asking his Guide team and not enough directing.
I just love how this stuff works!
David,
Yes, talk about the synchronicity — love it! Your technique of writing and printing out a letter to your guides is an awesome concept. Writing and typing activates the hands as energetic extensions of the Heart chakra, not to mention all the other elements of Manifesting this calls into play.
Speaking of synchronicity, I’ve had this conversation with my reading clients three times in this week — and I regularly use the metaphor of Board Room Meetings to describe working with your guides. Yesterday afternoon, I worked on a section for a product that incorporates this metaphor.
Now, I’m thinking I may just yank that right out and post it on Shift Your Spirits. May I mention your idea of addressing your guides in a letter format? It’s very powerful…
Wow! I’m so glad this article came out in a timely manner!
Slade - I’m glad you agree with all this and have given the same sort of advice to your clients. I’m always reminding clients (and myself!) that we are the manager in charge of our spiritual resources. And at the same time I’m constantly exploring how much more those resources can offer us.
David - I love it! Little miracles abound! I’m going to pass along the technique of writing a letter to our Guides too, if you don’t mind.
Just now I was on the phone with a friend who told me she “didn’t know how” to tell her Guides what she needed. I actually suggested calling in a meeting (Slade - we have the same Board meeting idea) and just talking out loud, right there in her living room.
There is so, so much support available to us - but we do have to ask, tell, and delegate!
Thanks to both of you!
Blessings,
Andrea
Andrea,
Thank you so much for the link-love!
Your article is one I want to read carefully and study, as there is much to learn from it.
Slade, Andrea, of course you are welcome to share this with whomever you please. I don’t own it. It wasn’t my idea. I believethe inspiration came from my Guide team. I think they were asking me for direction. I think they said, “Tell us what you want for Pete sake!” Judging from the Kundalini energy running up an down my spine as I say that, it’s the truth.
I can’t speak to results yet. But the energy around it feels absolutely amazing.
By the way, I’ve put the hard copy of that letter in a drawer in the night stand next to my bed that I don’t keep anything else in and never go to. I intend to leave it there and forget about it. It’ll be interesting to re-discover it at some future point in linear time.
Andrea, I found my copy of your book and have been reading it. Great information. Thanks for that is this article.
Andrea - thank you all for sharing about your Spirit Guides. I know we all have Spirit Guides but I haven’t had an experience with mine. I’ve had dreams and visions and heard a voice on a couple of occasions and have had an experience with an angel but not my Spirit Guides. I’ve called on them and my angels from time to time but haven’t really seen evidence of their trying to communicate with me. I have probably blocked it some how. So, I like to hear how others have communication with them in their lives and how they help them. Thank you all again for your openness and sharing.
Andrea,
Now that I have had time to digest your article, I can coherently comment. I appreciate that you have given such a detailed and practical guide to dealing with spirit guides. Good work.
I would like to add some thoughts, and forgive me if you have written about this elsewhere. I wanted to stress the idea of responsibility. By that I mean, with all the influx of information we may receive intuitively, it is up to us to discern what is practical and impractical, what is sensible, and what is nonsense.
Not all spirits are spiritual. Just as there are spirits all too willing to help us, there are also frivolous, spirits, and even malevolent spirits, who are not so benevolent. Also, among helpful spirits, there are those of different levels of knowledge and evolution.
So it is up to us, as much as is in our power, to be wise in applying and inspiration we might receive.
Have you written about this before? I would love to read your take on this.
Patricia - thank you!
Pat - I bet you interact more with your Guides than you think. Often, those spontaneous ideas and flashes of inspiration we get (like when we think of a topic for a blog post!) are received from our Guide team. It’s subtle and very, very ordinary, so we often miss it!
But even if we think we’re not receiving communication, that doesn’t stop us from telling them what assistance we want and need. Try asking for more, and let me know what happens!
Blessings,
Andrea
ReddyK - thank you for bringing this up! I absolutely agree with you - we are responsible for putting guidance into action in a discerning way. That’s part of our “managerial” responsibilities!
I also agree with you completely that discorporate beings are not always helpful, and can in fact be harmful. A lot of my Soul Realignment work entails removal and binding of attaching negative entities! The best way to find out whether we are communicating with a positive or negative being is to ask “Is your Soul/being in alignment with Divine Love, Light, and Truth?” Spirits must answer positively, otherwise we need to send them away.
When it comes to our Spirit Guide teams, these are usually Souls that are a little further along in their spiritual advancement that we ourselves are. Again, if we are not sure whom we are speaking to, we can always ask. We don’t want to be speaking to a bored (frivolous, as you say!) Earthbound spirit posing as a Guide!
Finally, there have been a few occasions where clients have presented with negative Spirit Guides that they erroneously “hired” onto their team. That does happen, and can result in a great deal of negativity. So, it even bears asking your Guides when you communicate with them for the first time whether they are in alignment with Divine Love, Light, and Truth. There are ways to “fire” negative Guides, it’s one of the things I do in my work.
I write a bit about this in my book, and I may have mentioned it here and there on my blog, but I’m glad you brought it up! Thank you!
Blessings,
Andrea
Fascinating, wow, what am I doing here following this conversation? Am I more woo-woo than I thought I was? I don’t mean to insult anyone. Andrea and have laughed about our degrees of woo-wooness. I read this post the day it came out and I didn’t know how to comment. Then I went and listened to the wonderful teleclass recording that Andrea and Slade did together on Spirit Guides. If you haven’t yet listened to this call - do it now! It’s so informative and sincere. I must admit even though I consider myself a very practical accountability coach, I now intend to use my guides.
Pat I’ve kind of felt the same way. I’ve kind of always known I’ve had them but I thought the channel of communication wasn’t clear. Well, that clarity is up to me to create. Now I know that the time is perfect because I’m in the process of making some pretty big decisions. I always tell my clients to tap all their resources and it’s time I enlist the capable aid of my guides. Listen to the call folks. Slade and Andrea have presented a road map of communication that is clear and thorough.
[...] You came here to exercise, express, and practice this most supreme purpose. You must Step Up. Being a strong leader doesn’t mean you are good at everything, that you know how to do everything, that you don’t require help… The most effective leaders learn how to surround themselves with others who are more skilled and knowledgeable in areas they are not. The best leaders know how to delegate. [...]
Tom - watch out! Once you’re on the “woo woo” path, it’s hard to stop … hee hee. Thank you so much for your kind comments about the class Slade and I taught together!
I think you make an excellent point - clarity of communication with our Guides IS up to us. Thank you for putting it so well! Now, give your Guides a “practical” and defined task and let us know over here how it works out!
That class recording, by the way, can be accessed at http://www.empoweredsoul.com/classes.htm
Thank you, Tom!
Blessings,
Andrea
Andrea, I just signed up for your teleconference tomorrow evening. One of the articles that my readers have liked most is the one that I shared the notes from the Teleconference that you and Slade did. You can find my take of the conference call at http://patriciasingleton.blogspot.com/2007/11/lets-talk-about-spirit-guides.html . I learned so much from both you and Slade. I am looking forward to this one tomorrow.
Hi Andrea
After reading Slade’s newsletter, I went to the blog’s link. Thanks to both of you for the guidance on how to communicate to our guides. I must put this to work in my life, or it is already happening. I often consider doing certain things, I’m talking to God or so I thought, and all kinds of info come my way. It is usually exactly what I want or was searching for. Tis is amazing.
I have a queation. What is the difference between intuition and this communication with guides, or is it the same thing?
Andrea,
I noticed while reading this post two things: 1) that like Tom, I thought that Spirit Guide communication was rather foggy at best and 2) the realization of “Wow! I can do that?!!”
Thank you for reposting the link to access the recording Tom mentions, too - as soon as I push submit, I’m off to listen to it.
And thank you, David for sharing that you write and print out letters to your Guides. I’m going to do that, too.
Most of all I love the reminder that I can say, “Guides, I so appreciate your gifts and willingness to help me - just please remember where I’m at and give me what I need in a way or at a pace I can understand and implement. I’m still dealing with the concept of space and time, and it’s a bit of a trip!”
Love that!
Andrea and Tom - thank you for addressing my comment. I’m signed up for your teleconference tonight and I’m looking forward to it. I’m hoping to get more clarity on how to work with my Spirit Guides.
Andrea - did you and Slade do a teleconference on “Managing Your Spirit Guides” and was it taped? I looked for it in your site and signed up for your free report but did not see an audio for it. If there’s one and I’m missing it, would you mind sending me the link? I would love to listen to it. Enjoyed your last teleclass on “What You Don’t Know Can Serve You”. You helped me a lot. After you answered my question, I went to mute and got cut off and couldn’t get back on. Sorry, for the disturbance - guess it was still that negative energy.
Thank you for your support and sharing your wisdom.
This is a great article. I guess my spirit guides sent me here today
My spirit guides stay on the autobahn. This is wonderful thing because “they” continue to lead me to creativity. Learning to define limits as to action is definitely the key.
Thanks for sharing!
Patricia - thank you so much for including the link to your article here. I remember it was a really wonderful summary! I look forward to having you on the call.
Louise - great question. Yes, communicating with your Spirit Guides and using your intuition is pretty much the same thing. My definition of intuition is “communication with our resources on the spiritual plane,” which includes our Higher Self as well as our Spirit Guides. Sounds like you are already receiving a lot of great information!
Suzanne - I’m thrilled you realized that OF COURSE you can do that!
I would go off on my “everyone is intuitive and psychic” song and dance, but I’ll restrain myself here …
You are completely right - you can let your Guides know if they’re going too fast, being not obvious enough, etc. …. and they absolutely love it when we say “thank you.”
Pat - The link to the Spirit Guide class with Slade is on my Classes page on my website - it’s the third one down, I think! I’m so glad you enjoyed the class!
Blessings,
Andrea
ImANicePerson - Glad you stopped by! Sounds like you have a fast-paced team! Yes, absolutely don’t be afraid to set some limits if they are going too fast. Nothing is ever lost. Sometimes we worry that we might shut down our creative flow - we won’t. That’s the benefit of “time” not existing on the spiritual plane - our Guides are always available to inspire us, and they can do it on our time if they have to.
Blessings,
Andrea
Andrea,
I love that our guides work for us and we can be specific in what we need - and a timetable! .. and I agree not all spirits are ‘helping’ but I just had one think he was helping - and probably was, but I no longer wanted his help……..
I recently had a ’spirit’ leave my shoulder during a meditation. My shoulder had been in pain and I went inside to find out why. When I asked why the spirit being was there, he said that he was protecting my heart. I said thanks and asked him to leave - I no longer needed heart protection. …
Hi Michelle,
That’s a great story! We do from time to time have attaching spirits that inhabit our physical body … interesting that this one felt he had a job to do, even if it meant causing you discomfort.
Thank you for sharing that experience!
Blessings,
Andrea
This is a most strange day.. My guides have been busy trying to get me to both yours and slades page..very strange experience that I will one day share with all but for the moment I will say thank you.Andrea if you can sense energy from a distance ..please take this light as a gift of my gratitude ..both from myself and all of my guides. Especially Eleena!
