Spiritual Certainty

How do we ever know for sure what is real and what isn’t?  What if our belief in Spirit Guides, a Higher Self, our intuition, the Law of Attraction, past lives, and whatever else we have incorporated into our spiritual perspective is nothing but a pretty illusion that allows us to feel better, more in control?  How do we move from belief to certainty?

Certainty comes from repeated, consistent personal experiences that validate our beliefs.  For example, I’ve had enough instances of absolutely uncanny overnight manifestations of my intentions to know that I attracted them into my life consciously and deliberately.  I’ve just done it too many times for these events to be purely coincidental, even if I did believe in coincidence!

Similarly, I know the Akashic Records to be a very real place.  I know we’re all somehow connected intimately.  There’s simply no other explanation for my ability to give accurate readings for clients that I know absolutely nothing about.  It’s magical every time, and hundreds of readings later, I have an absolute personal certainty of these things.

But here’s the catch.  The Universe never argues with our beliefs.  It will never convince us that we’re wrong.  If we insist on our own uncertainty, we will consistently attract experiences that leave us unsure of what is real and what is not.  If we talk to our Spirit Guides, but believe that we are in reality only communicating with our subconscious, then this is undoubtedly the case.  Our unreliable subconscious will no doubt give us misinformation. This leads us to no longer believe in our Spirit Guides as a source of information and guidance.  And so our uncertainty is affirmed.  If we do a manifestation process and only believe halfway that it will work, it will work only halfway.  If we give someone a reading, but are unconvinced of our own psychic abilities, most likely our information will be only partially accurate.

In other words, we must have certainty before the Universe affirms and reflects that certainty back to us through our experiences.  I can see the eyes rolling now!  “That’s great, Andrea.  In order to be certain, I have to first be certain.  Thanks a lot.”  But where does certainty come from before that?

Thankfully, we can borrow certainty from each other.  We can witness someone else’s certainty, see that it is working for them, and adopt the position that, if it is possible for them, it is also possible for us.  This is the role of the spiritual teacher - to give us certainty that has not been gained from our own personal experiences. Long before I ever became a practicing psychic, I was a client.  Receiving a reading allowed me to recognize what was possible.  Until I had gained my own experiences as a psychic, I “borrowed” my teacher’s certainty in her particular method of accessing the Records.  Now I’m not only convinced of my own psychic ability, but that anyone can unfold their psychic potential, also.

We can find people that we trust, notice what is working for them, and learn from them.  We don’t have to gain certainty all on our own.  Spiritual teachers are all around us - at work, in our families, through books, classes, workshops,  and in history.  Their job is not to convince us of their beliefs.  They uphold certainty in the absence of our personal experience.  Spiritual certainty is a precious commodity.  If certainty is something you want, find someone who already has it.  Borrow it, with an open heart, until you have discovered your own.

Who are your teachers?  Who have you borrowed certainty from?  Who has, perhaps, borrowed certainty from you?

Blessings,
Andrea

What you say makes a lot of sense. If each of us follows a thread back, we can identify the steps which have led to where we are now. We can discern the people we met in certain places at certain times are linked to our thoughts, hopes or sense of what was and wasn’t going in our favor. As we think about certain kinds of skills we aim to develop, its no coincidence that you attract certain kinds of teachers into your life. Its a question of synchrony or aligning your energy with the frequency or vibration of like-minded souls. As you probe your readers with meaningful questions, we feel compelled to reflect more about the significance of our choices in ways we hadn’t been aware of before.

Andrea, this is so very true. I have had great teachers who taught the lessons and then moved on but what they taught me is still with me today giving the certainty of who I am and what I believe and “know” to be true for me. My daughter has been one of those teachers who has taught me that it is ok for others to have different beliefs than I do. Spiritually, she and I are in different places in our development. That does not mean one of us is superior to the other. It just means that, at least in this lifetime, we are in different places. Who knows? Next lifetime, she may choose to be where I am today and I may choose to be where she is today because of the various lessons that it will teach each of us. Different is ok.

    Andrea,

I’m reminded of how you demand to see it before you believe it — when believing first is the key to seeing it at all.

As for teachers — in my role as an intuitive, there is actually a great role reversal that I don’t think my clients are even aware of. Perhaps they believe that because I’m connecting to their guides on their behalf and acting as a kind of interpreter, that I am acting as teacher, and they are the ones learning.

But actually, I receive a lot of clarification, affirmation, and answers from the Readings I do for others. Their responses and feedback, telling me when I’m on my mark, when I pull out uncanny names and pieces of information…

That’s really how I am taught — by stepping forward in faith and receiving confirmation feedback as observations. I can then take those positive responses as data and invest them forward in my next step out on a limb…

Liara - thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. Yes, our teachers are all around us! Sometimes we just have to set our sights on what we wish to receive - and we do attract the people that represent those specific energetic qualities to inspire us and let us “borrow” their certainty.

Patricia - it’s wonderful that you can uphold your daughter’s beliefs and perspectives as equally valid as your own, even though she is in a different place. That truly is an amazing gift, and no doubt you are a great spiritual teacher to her in this, also! Isn’t it wonderful - no relationship is accidental, we each have so much to gain from the other.

Slade - I was smiling at your comment. I completely agree, I feel also that I learn so much with each and every reading I do! Our work does take a huge leap of faith … I remember how nervous I was when I read for my very first client. But that leap of faith is also hugely rewarded with certainty when we get such positive feedback. I think we’re so privileged to be in this profession!

    Blessings,
    Andrea

    CERTAINTY

I am in the certainty of being a tool for peace, love, compassion and joy!
I have the certainty of deep wisdom and clarity!
I just know certain things from the depth of my heart!
I am in the certainty that generosity and courage bring abundance!
I have the certainty of divine patience and the knowing of that the stream knows where to go!

Thanks dear Ones! You are all my teachers!

    Hi Berit,

See, this is the certainty that others can borrow from! So good to have you here!

    Blessings,
    Andrea

I think certainty is just a construct of our own minds, an ingredient necessary to make our spells work - part of a ritual if you will.

How can anything you try to do possibly fail if you believe in it, make it part of your reality?

    Hi Andrea,

I’d like to offer a slightly different way of looking at this. I have found embracing uncertainty to be very helpful for me in achieving peace and joy in my life. But I kind of feel that where you use the word ‘certainty’, I would use the word ‘trust’. For me, ‘certainty’ is a mind state, whereas ‘trust’ is a process. Ultimately even trust can be let go of - when everything is perfect, there is no need to trust or not trust, and there is no need for certainty either. Hope you are well
    Love Andy

Vitor, I totally agree with you! Certainty is about creating a reality through a consciously chosen belief system. It is definitely a construct - a necessary one, I think.

Andrew, that’s a really great point you make. Uncertainty combined with utter trust will definitely serve us well. Doesn’t it eventually result in a kind of certainty, though? And then we confront the next uncertainty …

I like this idea of “when everything is perfect” … let me know if that can actually be achieved! :-)

    Blessings,
    Andrea

    Hey Andrea,

Thanks for your response. The kind of certainty that embracing uncertainty leaves us with I would label as ‘peace’. At that point there is no certainty or uncertainty there is just ‘flow’. I think it can be achieved, I will get back to you when i’ve mastered it though :))) The key to the process I feel is exploring and releasing all the old conditioned fears which block us from trusting in the flow of life. Easy then hahaha! Take care, Andrew

Hmmm, Andrew, I like it. Maybe it’s when we’ve utterly let go of the need to be certain of anything at all that we attain that kind of peace.

Let’s keep comparing notes on the process! :-)

    Blessings,
    Andrea

Yes, thats exactly how I see it. Interesting as well how you have been reflecting on dealing with fear as well lately, which is integral to this process of releasing the need for certainty.
    Regards,
    Andrew
