The Nature of Desire

There are many spiritual schools that would have us do away with our desires entirely.  Not only do I think such a state of being is unrealistic, but un-”desirable” as well!  (If we truly think about it, can we desire to be without desire?)

Desire is what allows us to happily, playfully, joyously step into the role of being the Creator of our experience.  Without desire, what would we create?  Desire is life - it is inexhaustible, because it allows us to create and express ourselves according to where we are on our path, right now.  When one desire is fulfilled, we conceive of another one.  Desire leads us to explore just how grandly we can manifest, and how incredibly generous Divine Abundance truly is.

When our entire state of well-being, on the other hand, depends on receiving what we desire, we are in actuality craving.  When we will not be happy unless we receive that job, a certain income level, or professional success, if our entire self-esteem is hung up on that one desired outcome, that is craving. Craving is the energy of lack.  We do not manifest what we crave.  We may make it happen, through struggle and perseverance. But then what?  After all, it is human nature to conceive of the next goal as soon as one is reached.

Desire, on the other hand, understands that what we wish to manifest is just an expression of who we are - it is not our entire identity.  Sure, we’d like to have a certain amount of money in the bank, maybe have our “dream home” or exceptional professional success.  Desire understands that we will be equally happy, equally fulfilled, and equally confident whether we receive those things or not.
When we align with our highest path and purpose, there is no desire that the Universe will not graciously and generously meet.  Our highest path and purpose is the path of greatest spiritual growth.  When we align with that path, our desires are born out of authentic self-expression of our Soul’s gifts.  Is anything too frivolous to desire?  I don’t think so.  I ask for a certain dollar amount at the beginning of every month!  And every month, the Universe over-delivers, teaching me again and again just how much is available to us.

Desire lets us engage with Divine Abundance.  May you create all that you desire!

Blessings,
Andrea
