Working with your Spirit Guides

We have a highly intimate relationship with our Spirit Guides.  If our Higher Self can be regarded as our parent aspect on the spiritual plane, then our Spirit Guides are the caring aunts and uncles that are deeply invested in our growth and well-being.  The primary role of our Spirit Guides is to offer us information from a more varied perspective than our Higher Self alone can access.  Our Spirit Guides come from a slightly more advanced aspect of Soul evolution than our Higher Selves.  Our Spirit Guides have their own history, life experiences, and Soul-level gifts and talents to draw upon.  Each Guide has its own unique perspective through which it offers us guidance.  In the physical, we have many teachers and mentors beyond our parents.  Similarly, we are offered a broad range of assistance and information through our Spirit Guides on the spiritual plane.

Our Spirit Guides are the only non-physical entities that have direct interaction with us while we are incarnated.  All other entities must have our permission, at least at the unconscious level, in order to communicate with us.  Our Spirit Guides, however, can seek to influence us and initiate communication as they see fit, in alignment with our highest path and purpose.  Not only do they work with our Higher Selves on the spiritual plane, they also work with us directly here in the physical.  Each of our Spirit Guides impulses us in a certain way.  The impulse can be through a physical sensation, a scent, a tingle along our spine, a thought pattern, or a specific feeling.  This is how our Spirit Guides seek our attention.  Through these impulses, they make their presence known and offer us their guidance.  This process remains largely unconscious for most of us.  However, if you begin to pay close attention to sensations and occurrences that may be impulses from your Spirit Guides, you will begin to discern recognizable patterns.  You will begin to discern what impulses your Spirit Guides use to alert you to their presence.

When I do a Spirit Guide reading for a client, I always ask for information on these impulses.  From twitching toes to shivers down the spine, from feelings of intense love at the heart center to a sudden sense of mental alertness or a sharpening of vision, an impulse can take almost any form.

While our Guides certainly have a wealth of information to offer us, we can also ask them to take action on our behalf.  We must request their assistance consciously, however, in order for them to actively support our goals.  Our Guides cannot take action on our behalf on their own initiative, because this would interfere with our free will and free choice.  This is why it is helpful to always include your Spirit Guides in any prayer request.  If we consciously request their aid, our Spirit Guides are able to assist us in manifesting our desired outcomes.  They can coordinate further assistance for us from the various angelic realms.  Our Spirit Guides themselves can also lend energetic support to any of our life situations.

Our Spirit Guides can truly be a tremendous resource for us.  They continually seek to uplift us, and to be a positive, loving influence in our lives.  They will, however, never tell us what to do.  While they have a wealth of information and guidance to offer, they understand that the power and responsibility of choice lies with us.

I seem to have a strong connection with my first position spirit guide. Sometimes I forget she is there, but when I remember her, I have a strong feeling of love in my heart. To me she represents truth, justice, understanding, and wisdom. As Andrea says, our spirit guides don’t tell us what to do, but what I’ve seen as a message from her is the word “NONJUDGMENT” in large white letters against black. I interpret this as not judging others. When I practice nonjudgment (I know, this is difficult) I am much happier and more peaceful.

This is a fascinating topic. It sparks curiosity, prompts hesitation, and even provokes ridicule from different kinds of people. Those who are ready to embrace possibility will welcome spirit guides with open arms, though not always sense how to interact to further earthly growth. Those people who describe spirit worlds as “airy-fairy” have no use for things they don’t value or choose to see.

Andrea, I just started reading your site today and this article is one that helps me in so many ways. I am new to working with my guides, I knew something/someone was there before, yet, I had not really connected with them till just recently. I had a deep need for them in the past two weeks, and asked them to assist, and lo and behold…..Voila’ !! I now have started thanking them and allowing them more room to point me in the best directions, and I am feeling more blessed each day. I was, past tense, in the deepest depression up until 3 weeks ago, and now, well, I owe much to my guides. Oh, would like to add for the record, I had to surrender! Tough for this Aries to do, and yet, that, I feel, was a key to the work that is flowing so freely now. I have chosen an operative word for surrender now, to enlighten my higher self and guides that I am open to assistance… “UNCLE”…like I used to use when my brothers would dogpile me, when we were kids. It is quick, simple, to the point, and seems to flow past my ego without a bruise….. and so I say, Thank You! For allowing me to share, and for sharing with the world, your gifts, your words, your self! Selah……

Victoria - thanks so much for your comment! I’m so glad you’ve started asking for help … it’s amazing how easy it is to overlook or forget such a simple thing. And yet - if we don’t ask, they also can’t act on our behalf.

Yes, sometimes we have to cry “uncle” and just allow Spirit to move through us. We are, after all, here to work with and express Spirit, not to do it all on our own!

    Glad to have you here!
    Blessings,
    Andrea

I am just learning about spirit guides. So they communicate by impulse, not by language? I’ve read some people “hear” the guides. . .

And my question was, if the angels speak, in what language? I think in English most of the time, but my first language is Japanese and all my ancestors speak old Japanese. . .

Hi Akemi! Well, our Guides “impulse” us, but how we receive this is different for every single person. The impulse is always energetic, but we translate that energy through language, a physical sensation, a vision in our mind’s eye, an inner “voice” … my book goes into detail on how to discern your unique intuitive perception.

As for language - it’s always your own! Again, they communicate with us energetically, and we’re the ones who place that communication into a frame of reference that we can understand while we’re in the physical. So if you expect them to speak English, or Japanese, that’s what you’ll get. Once we’re discarnate, we have no need of actual “language” the way we do when we’re in a body, and all communication is what we might consider telepathic. Language is actually pretty clunky.

    Thanks for the questions!
    Blessings,
    Andrea

    Hi Andrea,

I’m so glad I found this site and all the information. I have a question in regard to spirit guides and being clairaudient. I recently discovered that I can hear spirit. It was kind of mind boggling at first but I’m getting used to it. I’ve read that you should ask spirit to identify themselves so you know that you’re working with the highest vibration. I ask for the highest and best and ask for the white light to surround myself. I have been asking them to identify but nothing yet. I listen and maybe they’re taking slow and easy steps since I hear small words like hello, good night, things like that Do you have any recommendations? I want to make sure I’m not opening up to anything negative and I feel reassured.

    Hi Pam and Ian,

The number one rule I have for communicating with any entities is this: Ask “Is your Being aligned with Divine Love, Light and Truth?” You must get an immediate and positive response. If you get anything evasive, like a “Why do you want to know?” or something, tell that entity to leave you alone. Positive beings immediately identify themselves as such, and they certainly don’t mind you asking!

Pam, you can ask the spirits you are communicating with whether they are part of your Spirit Guide Team. Again, if they are positive, they will identify themselves. Our Guides are not coy or shy - believe me, they are so unbelievably thrilled to be communicating with us that they don’t make it difficult!

    Hope that helps!

    Blessings,
    Andrea
