Don’t try to teach a horse how to sing …

Note: In no way is this post intended to insult horses, or those more interested in sitting on the couch and watching the game … both are perfect just as they are.

My first voice teacher in college had a little plaque in her studio with a very memorable inscription: “Don’t try to teach a horse how to sing. It’s a waste of your time, and it annoys the horse.” Sixteen years later, I’m noticing the wisdom in this humorous advice.

When we follow a spiritual path, we are often so enamored of our journey and our discoveries of our spiritual resources that we try to teach a great many, many horses how to sing. We try to share our shift in consciousness with those that are not open, not ready, and not interested. And, truly, it is a waste of our efforts. And, yes, we really do annoy the ones we are trying to “help.”

Who are we, anyway, to decide that they would benefit from our wisdom and knowledge? Who are we to think that a spiritual path would serve them? It’s a little bit like deciding that a horse needs to learn how to sing … completely dishonoring its own perfect nature.

So, the next time you find yourself getting on a soap box, or trying to shed a spiritual perspective on someone else’s situation, or “helping” in any other way, ask yourself this: “Am I just annoying the horse?”  And remember - the problem is never with the horse!
Blessings,

Andrea
