The Right Time for Change

I recently embarked on a new venture - a 17-month spiritual development course. If I had known that it would require me to rise at an obscenely early hour (try before 4 a.m.!!) and do a daunting amount of meditating, I may have thought twice before investing myself financially and energetically.

Luckily, I had no idea what I was in for. And even though I really, really don’t want to, I’ve been dragging myself out of bed and doing my meditations. My husband and others who know of my new endeavor think I’m nuts. Why would I do this to myself? I have a one year old who insists on getting up at shortly after 5 a.m. I have my own business to run. I barely have any time as it is. And, right now, I’m back to taking a nap along with the baby in the afternoons just to get through the day.

As if this schedule isn’t difficult enough, I’ve also been sick (probably from sleep deprivation) and have had my parents in town for the last week. So, the question comes to mind - why am I doing this right now?

What I’ve come up with is this: There’s just never a right time. Whatever changes we are looking to make, it’s never going to be convenient. The part of us that resists change - any change at all - will always find reasons why now is not a good time to start.

So if you want to start a meditation practice, or an exercise program, or find the love of your life, or any lifestyle changes that require effort - just start. Do it tomorrow, or better yet, today. You will always find a reason to put it off. And then, no matter what comes up, remind yourself that there will never be a better time to do what you know is good for you than right now.

The parts of you that resist change will quiet down. You will adapt to your new routine - and the rest of your life will adapt to it, also. You will find that by embracing positive change, you will re-evaluate what you’ve taken for granted in your life.

For instance, I’m quite determined not to let my child wake up so early any more! It’s really not working for me, so why not create a new routine that works for both of us? I had just gotten so used to her early hours that I had stopped questioning her need to rise before dawn.

With the determination to stick to my meditation program, I opened myself up to re-evaluating how I could accommodate it into my life. To my astonishment, it proved really easy once I took another look at the situation. This morning, my daughter stayed in bed until 6:30 a.m. … I know, that’s still early, but to me, it was heaven! Tomorrow, I’ll actually get to “sleep in” until 5:00 a.m.

There is enough room in your life to do what you want to do! Just start - don’t put it off. Your clear intentions will create new possibilities that you were not even aware of before you resolved to take action.

Many blessings to all,
