Avoiding Negativity

There is no doubt we live in a sometimes negative world, and there are many negative people out there who thrive on putting others down. However, there are extremely effective ways to combat negativity, to the point where you just don’t encounter it anymore.

Negativity thrives on our reaction to it. If you “buy in” to negativity, it grows. For instance, if someone puts you down, you have two choices. You can react by wondering if their low opinion of you is correct, or if there is some truth to it. You can lose sleep, wondering how you can change their minds. You can get paranoid, wondering if everyone else in your life has the same low opinion. This is giving energy to that negative person, and comment. You are allowing that person’s opinion to create negative emotion within you. That is “buying in” to negativity.

Your other option is a very different reaction. You can meet this person’s negativity with the recognition that they are in a very different place in their lives from our own. You can celebrate the fact that we are each on our own unique journey, and we are all in the perfect place for our Soul’s growth. Some people need to go through phases of negativity so that they can then rise above it. This is not your issue. You can bless the person that put you down, honor them for where they are in their life, and refuse to take on the comment that they made. The negative person is entitled to their opinion. But you can refuse to let it affect you. You also don’t have to do battle with their negative attitude. You don’t have to convince them to take a more positive view. Again, that would be giving the negativity your energy. They are in a different place from you. They have a different perspective, a different frame of reference. That’s all.

Over time, if you stop reacting to negativity around you, it simply falls away. When you don’t give any energy to negativity, you stop feeding it. After a while, it looks for a better feeding ground. It’s like stray cats - keep putting food out, and you’ll keep attracting more stray cats. But stop feeding them, and they’ll relocate. Negativity will relocate, too.

Notice your reactions to what is going on around you. If the evening news make you worried, fearful, angry, or frustrated, stop watching. (I recommend not watching the news, anyway. It’s never good news.) If you are surrounded by people who are judgmental, gossips, or critical, then find new people to surround yourself with - at least, until you are centered enough so that they no longer affect you. Find situations and people that uplift and inspire you. Nurture yourself with positive surroundings. Pay no attention to negativity. After a while, you will find that very few negative situations or people come into your life. It’s really magical how they just fall away.

The Light that is our Soul never goes out. We just need to nurture it with positive energy so that it can shine brighter. After a while, it becomes so bright that it lights up all darkness in its vicinity.
