Passion is that delicious second-chakra energy that births our ideas, our vision, and our inspiration into the physical world. It is the energy that drives us into action, so that our dreams can become a reality.
Nothing changes in our lives without the driving force of passion – whether that passion be out of love or need. When we are passionately engaged with life, we are constantly in a state of birthing, of creating at the physical level. We create new circumstances, opportunities, results and relationships. If passion is coupled with Divine inspiration, we can create truly remarkable lives.
Many of us are scared of this powerful force, our passion. As we go through life, we discover disappointment, unfulfilled goals, roadblocks to what we want … and we learn not to want. We learn that “you can’t have it all,†or can’t have it all at once. We are taught to put others first, to give rather than to receive, and that desire is the root of all suffering. And so most of us learn to suppress passion, to not let desire rise within us until we are practically incapable of discerning what we truly want for ourselves.
But nothing is created without passion! When we are inspired by our Divine nature to create, we receive a vision, a dream. We engage with that vision out of love – love for Spirit, love for ourselves, and the love of serving others. But it is passion that translates our vision and love into physical reality.
What about detachment? What about the spiritual traditions that teach us to be without desire?
Detachment is as essential to the creation process as passion! The energy of attachment constantly pushes what we desire away from us. Wanting creates more wanting.
Okay … but passion, the energy of desire … that’s necessary to creation also! So is this a cruel joke the Universe plays on us? Passion is necessary, but so is detachment? How can we combine these energies so that creation becomes effortless?
I’ve struggled with this quite a bit over the years.  I’m a very passionate person! When I am inspired with a goal or desire, I’m like an impetuous puppy, joyfully bounding towards what I want … because I want what I want, and I generally want it NOW!
Over the years, I’ve become really, really good at manifesting … even though I go after my goals with passionate desire. I want quite a bit, and unabashedly so. But I’m not attached.
Here’s the secret: Passion is about the process of creating. Passion directed at a result, an outcome, will inevitably turn into attachment … and the result will not show up.
Creating anything in our lives is about the experience of creation … not about a result. It is by creating new circumstances that we can experience ourselves in new ways. It is through creation that we experience ourselves as Divine. Without a vision of what we want, passion cannot spark the creative process. At the same time, the creative process is not about successfully reaching a goal or result. It is simply about the process itself.
So joyfully, passionately engage in creating what you want – for the sake of the process, not the result. When we do this, the result becomes irrelevant and inevitable all at once.
Blessings,
Andrea

Beautiful, powerful post, Andrea. The right words, at the right time for me. It’s a delicate dance, I’m discovering. I am also discovering – although not personally – how blocking our passions and the creative process can manifest as physical ailments. Choose unabashedly!
Ooooh, Sue! “Choose unabashedly!” – I LOVE that! Yes, yes yes!
Thank you so very much, Andrea.
I have been unable to articulate my position on this topic. I completely support the thoughts as you have presented them in this short article.

Another great post. I have thought a lot about passion lately and perhaps can shed some light. The origin of the word is passiÅ and is associated with the sufferings or allowings of Christ. A comparison of pass-ion to another word act-ion further illuminates why this energy is so mistrusted and misunderstood. Looked at in another context, to be pass-ive is frowned upon while being act-ive is typically encouraged. We associate passion with desires we cannot control and action with will power by which we may exert control. But herein is the source of attachment: the compulsion to control outcomes. When we realize as Christ did our connection with Source we understand that we are not in opposition to a hostile Universe but rather cooperating with a benevolent one. We see that passion, i.e. allowing the flow of the full force of the Universe, rather than action is the proper means by which to manifest in this present world.
Ken, what an interesting perspective! I see action as a natural outcome of passion … one flowing into the other, seamlessly. Action is integral to the creative process – but you are correct, it is NOT about controlling an outcome. NOT taking action is actually impossible for us – we are always, always in action, even if that action is just breathing. Action is the physical expression of our Being.
Andrea, I always enjoy engaging with you. Your posts are nothing if not provocative. But I ask: who or what is breathing us when we are asleep? Who is beating our hearts? Is sleep an action we take or does actively pursuing sleep disrupt the natural flow that would allow sleep to overcome us? To be sure these are fine distinctions but I believe they hold a clue to accessing more creative energy and getting out of our own way. Much appreciation and love to you.
Your article really resonated with me, Andrea.
Over the years, I’ve been pondering the idea of creating things with passion and releasing them out into the Universe. This approach seems especially true in art–one wonderful example is the sand paintings of the Tibetan Buddhist monks!
So, I’d venture to say that passion is a generative energy free of ego and “ownership.” There is an aspect of impermanence to creative passion, too If you let go of ego, then you let go of “tracking” whatever you create with the trust that the creation goes to the greatest good wherever it’s needed.
I’m glad you got me thinking about this again.
Spring blessings,
Lori
great article, Andrea. People often see detachment as exclusive of desire but it’s not desire that’s the issue. Its attachment to the results or expectation where we have troubles and cause ourselves pain.
When we learn to allow things to be as they are, we’re much less likely to cause ourselves grief. And curiously enough, we then get better results than we might have even dreamed.
Andrea,
I always look forward to your insightful posts. Keep writing and teaching!
This is a wonderful article that makes something mysterious about manifestation truly easy to understand – we are here to experience, and all our “stuff” is just our experiences of our stuff. Thank you so much Andrea! Do you mind if I link to or retweet it?
Thank You Andrea…
A good friend of mine who lives in Canada, said something to me a couple of weeks ago: “My show is the passion of my life…”
Ever since he said that to me…I can’t stop thinking about it. I’ve asked myself…”what is my passion…?” And now…your great post here has given me a sense of direction concerning going toward my own show with a deeper sense of passion.
Your teachings have caused me to question what it is I really am attached to.
Thank You…Continued Success…

Dr. Dan
Hi Andrea,
I would like to thank you so much for your words as they really touched my soul and I am so happy to understand the power of universe with your teachings!
I am so exited about the things I am doing right now as they are part of my true passion for creation of beauty and wealth around me.
Thank you as well for fantastic call for students of Discovery series. I was blown away after that!
I feel like I jumped to the next level in the game of life!
Thank you Andrea!!!
I appreciate this post because it was definitely enlightening, but I have one concern. I understand the concept of focusing on the creation process and being fully engaged in that arena. But what about the concept of “focus on the experience you desire rather than how to get that experience” That’s what I’ve been taught, even The Secret teaches that. Yet this concept seems to be the opposite of that. Could you expound on that?
Hi Alexis – I think focus on the process and focus on the experience is pretty much saying the same thing! I’m not a fan of focusing too much on the “how” either.
How do u define passsion? It simply means an uncontrolled emotion, that is meant to avoid. what I can make out from ur article is u have described all about happiness.
Andrea, this helps so much. I’ve been excitedly creating a really cool part-time job opportunity. The energy has been amazing. Then when I got the offer and heard how little they’d pay, my heart sunk.
After reading this post, I’m getting back on the wave I was riding when I created this opportunity. I know there’s amazing things coming my way to match that energy I’ve been riding!
@Sue – consider it an opportunity. It may not have taken the perfect form right off, but run with it. You never know. It may just be the doorway, not the house. I once took a clerical job on the side to pay the bills. I took the role where I could and it ended up being spun off into another company with me as a VP getting over 6 figures.
Opportunity has a funny way of showing up, right where we least expect it. If we discount what arises we may as the old saying goes, be selling diamonds for the price of spinach.
David, you’re so encouraging! I’m going to save your comment. Actually, the reason I want this part-time job is because I’m so impressed with the company. I’d love to learn how they’re so successful. And like you say, you never know where it could lead. Thanks!!
@Viraj – I don’t define passion as “uncontrolled emotion” – I define it as emotion that moves us into action. But everyone defines words differently … translate “passion” into “happiness” if that’s what works better for you.
@Sue – Congrats on manifesting the opportunity. I agree with David, you never know what will come of it!
@David – I totally agree! When we ask for something, what shows up may be the perfect next step we need … but only that next step is ever revealed. We never know exactly what the journey will look like, but if our intent is clear and aligned to our highest path, we are sure to get there.
Blessings,
Andrea
