If we are to evolve and expand to align more fully with our Divine purpose, new action will inevitably be required. We will be called upon to do things differently, to start new projects, relationships, business ventures and journeys. After all, if we did what we’ve always done, we wouldn’t be expressing growth and expansion, right?
It’s easy to assume that, if these new actions are fully aligned with our highest path and purpose, they will also be comfortable. We’ll move forward with confidence, feeling fully supported by the Universe and totally secure with our actions – even though we’re in brand-new territory. Aligning with our highest path and purpose should feel really good, right?
I call this “the comfort myth.” We are glorious, spiritual, Divine Beings. But we are also having a human experience. And the human part of us, the ego, usually has plenty of objections to doing anything new. While our Higher Self is confident in knowing that a new project or venture will serve our highest good, our ego creates doubt and fear to alert us that we are in unchartered territory. The ego wants to keep us safely within what it knows.
And so, when we begin to follow our Higher Self’s call to new action, the ego begins rumbling. It creates doubt, distraction, procrastination, negative thoughts and emotions … anything to keep us safe within our comfort zone. We can now do two things. We can placate the ego. We can invest ourselves in trying to feel better and try our hardest to eliminate doubt and fear. Perhaps we can even buy into the idea that our discomfort means that we are on the “wrong” track.
Or we can acknowledge that doubt is a natural part of doing anything new. We can acknowledge that the fear we are feeling is a deeply rooted survival instinct designed to keep us safe in this physical dimension. We can thank the ego for doing its job. And then we can take action, anyway.
We don’t know for sure what new action will feel like or what results it will yield. We cannot know – we’ve never been there before! The ego assumes the worst about the unknown in order to keep us safe. But only when we are in action can we truly know what that action will be like. How often have we tried something we didn’t think we would enjoy, only to find ourselves having fun? We cannot know an experience until we are IN the experience.
If we spend our time and energy in trying to get comfortable before we do anything new, we may well be stuck where we are forever.
Here is the real benefit of the spiritual path. The point is not to eliminate doubt and fear. While we are in a human experience, we have an ego. The ego creates doubt and fear whenever it encounters anything new. The benefit of the spiritual path is that it shifts our REACTION to the doubt and fear created by the ego. We are inspired to new action by our Higher Self. The ego will immediately raise red flags about venturing into the unknown. We can now try to make the ego feel better. Inevitably, this leads to staying where we are, because the ego NEVER feels good about the unknown. Or we can sit with the red flags, acknowledge them fully, and practice non-reaction. We can say “Oh look, there’s fear. How interesting.” and take action, anyway.
Doubt and fear can keep us from taking new action that would align us more fully with our Divine purpose. Or doubt and fear can simply be there, acknowledged but not made important by reaction. And once we are in action, we may discover that doubt and fear melt away as the ego discovers a brand-new comfort zone.
There is nothing wrong with feeling doubt and fear on our path of expressing our Divine purpose. Doubt and fear only become obstacles if we decide they are obstacles. Let’s not subscribe to the comfort myth!
Blessings,
Andrea

What a timely article for me! Thanks for linking to it on facebook! I SO needed this reminder. I was thinking something along those lines this morning, when I chose to make a green smoothie for breakfast, even though I really, really wanted cookies! I thought – well, I know what it feels like to have cookies, and I know what it feels like to have a smoothie when I want it… why don’t I push myself to have a smoothie? It seems simple (and I’m a little embarrassed, writing it out!) but so often in the past I would have stayed with the comfortable cookies! This resonates really well with the recent manifestation article Steve wrote, too – it’s all coming together! Thanks.
Ha – my spam protection word is “move”.
I can’t hear this message enough! I’ve been enjoying some doubt-free time lately and it’s been bliss! Then this morning it hits me again and I notice I feel like a failure for feeling it. It’s shifted again now but I totally agree with you.
For me doubt creeps in when I am wondering how the hell I’m going to do what I’ve planned to or long to. Then I eventually remember that I (ego I) won’t be doing it anyway, I just need to let spirit do it through me and listen to the nudges and take action where guided to. Trust.
So actually in hindsight of earlier today, I see that instead of feeling like a failure for feeling doubt I was actually being called to a higher level of trust.
Well in that case, I look forward to more discomfort!
In peace and prosperity x x x

Andrea,
Speaking at conferences is one of the things I know is ‘part of my purpose’, yet I’ve had to work at it, and definitely step out of my comfort zone. Following purpose is rewarding, fulfilling, engaging and fun, but not always comfortable!
Thanks so much for the mention of our course on your site. Much appreciated.
Blessings
Amen, sister!
I think that this lesson is one of the ongoing ones in my life. I has certainly been front and centre for the last 6 months as I move into my new career and uncharted waters (here be dragons!). I love new discoveries and new adventures, so I do as you suggest – acknowledge the fear, (thank poor little ego for her concern) and do it anyway.
So far it has been exhilirating!
Blessings!
Keena
PS Thanks for the maps!
Andrea, why do you keep writing these articles specifically about me? It’s getting to be unnerving…
Here’s to the great adventure. Thanks for the pep talk.
Andrea, this has been the perfect message for me, at the perfect time. Thanks!
Namaste!
In his book ‘The Way of the Wizard’, Deepak Chopra talks about ego…. an instrument that is to be used for temporary needs of control and predictive steps………..
Nothing beyond, for the ego.
On the other hand, a human being is a channel of endless possibilities, except that it is a human being who views his/her life as a limited expression.
What an adventure awaits those who would take the leap of faith into the infinite!
Everything, beyond…!
