It’s tempting to compartmentalize our lives. We have our jobs or careers in one little box. It’s how we pay the bills, and how we can afford to pursue our passions outside of work. Those passions – spiritual development, for example – are kept in little boxes of their own. For a while, this model works. We go to our practical, bill-paying jobs every day, and pursue our spiritual development in our personal time.
Eventually, all that spiritual development we are doing makes us miserable at work! We have gained a sense of who we are as spiritual Beings, and as our Higher Selves have more and more input into our lives, we long to express our Divine nature into every aspect of our life. And our jobs may simply not allow us to do that.
Many, many spiritual seekers try to keep jobs and spirituality separate. We tell ourselves that we can’t put our families through a career transition, that we could never maintain our lifestyle if we switched directions … and we keep our spiritual path confined to nights and weekends. The divide between how we make a living and who we are as spiritual Beings grows wider and wider.
Is this a sustainable situation?
If our Soul’s purpose isn’t expressed in how we make a living, can we truly be living our Soul’s purpose? Of course not! If we want to experience true fulfillment on the spiritual path, eventually our life’s work has to become an expression of our Soul’s purpose. Mind you, our Soul’s purpose isn’t a job description. It can be expressed in infinite and very financially rewarding ways. But we cannot keep our spirituality in a little box, to be expressed only in life areas where it is convenient. Eventually, we have to create oneness, wholeness, integration. If we think we can continue on a spiritual path while sustaining separation … well, we’re just kidding ourselves.
So what do we do? What if we have that miserable six-figure corporate job that is putting our kids through college and paying our mortgage and all we long for is retirement when we can finally, finally be fully expressed as our Divine Selves? I’ve worked with several clients over the past few weeks who are exactly in this situation.
Here’s what has consistently come up in our sessions:
If you’ve sustained a high level of separation for a while, a feasible one-step solution is unlikely.
I’ve had to disappoint a few clients who wanted to experience integration in one swift move. If it’s taken ten years to get to a high level of separation, it may take a year or two to shift towards wholeness. The trick is to focus what next step is available right now – what career moves would bring our work more closely into alignment with our purpose? Maybe that’s a lateral move within our corporate environment. Maybe it’s taking professional development classes and starting a business on the side.
Decisive action will be required.
It’s taken effort to sustain a separation between work and our spirituality. It’s going to also take a level of effort to come into integration between the two. Effort doesn’t mean struggle. Effort doesn’t mean that it will be “hard.” It’s just going to take some time, energy, and a high level of intention. Taking action is a requirement for change.
Our focus must be on the next available step.
It’s easy to look at the top of a staircase and think of how very far away it seems. We can look at all the steps and think of how exhaustingly many there are. Some of us even try to convince ourselves that, if we just say enough affirmations, we can catapult ourselves right past our present belief system to the top of those stairs. Inevitably, we end up bruised and disappointed. But if we just focus on the next step at hand, and then the next, and then the next as they are revealed, we find that we’ve climbed those stairs in no time at all!
No matter where we are in our career, our financial situation, or our spiritual development – integration is not only possible, but becomes necessary for our continued growth. Separation is not sustainable on a spiritual path.
What can you do today to express your Soul’s purpose in your work? The next step is always available. What’s yours? Leave your comment and share!
Blessings,
Andrea

While moving towards full integration, focusing on the next available step at hand is wise. I certainly agree that some allowance in time has to be given, if there has been a high level of separation up to now.
I am just wondering if it is possible to have a change in perspective in how our jobs can reflect our soul purpose, in the meantime. I am assuming that by jobs, we are taking them to mean conventional day jobs. In our jobs, surely we come into contact with colleagues and bosses. Would it not be possible to live our purpose through helping and inspiring them while expressing our Higher Selves?
I sooooo needed to hear this right now. Thank you for speaking directly to my heart!!
Thanks for this post. The issue that’s been on my mind recently has actually been that I’m not sure my highest purpose is being expressed in my personal relationships, even though I feel very purposeful and directed in my business life. It seems everyone has different places where this kind of integration is important. Best, Chris
Hi Evelyn – You bring up a good point. We can always reflect a bit of our Soul’s purpose into whatever situation we find ourselves in. However … how much can we help and inspire others if we’re in a situation where we can, say, only express 10% of our Divine Being? Wouldn’t we serve the world in a bigger capacity if we could express the fullness of our Divinity?
Kelley – Glad this resonated with you!
Chris – Integration across the board is what we’re really shooting for! And of course, we’re never “done” because as we integrate, we evolve ourselves … You’re totally right, sometimes we need to work on authentic self-expression in work, relationships, health, finances … it’s a fantastic and ongoing journey!
Blessings,
Andrea
I think sometimes just having the AWARENESS that we’re not on purpose helps a great deal. Then we can start making those little decisions that move us toward our purpose rather than away from it. Having that awareness may finally give you the “permission” to say NO the next time you are asked to do something that you know in your heart of hearts is not going to help you move toward your soul’s purpose. Little by little, decision by decision, you are then able to recalibrate your internal compass – and before long you may find that you’re almost there!
This is exactly the reason that I teach people how to use a “business” database for their entire lives not just their business. It helps to keep their lives in balance. I don’t believe you can compartmentalize your life and be happy. More and more businesses are seeing that and embracing this idea – and that’s what keeps me so busy! However, I am also a model for what I teach.
Cathy – You’re so right! Change begins with awareness … once we have awareness, it’s harder and harder to pretend that change is unnecessary.
Marni – I agree, we can’t keep our various life areas in little boxes. We are whole Beings, after all!
Blessings,
Andrea
Wow, this must have been written for me
Thank you for this blog Andrea. I know that in my life those compartments can get pretty full and I am starting to see the overflow into each of them. I suppose it is now time for this integration to really happen. I think another step needs to be taken, for myself anyway, that fine tunes what it is I do in my life. I have so many different activities I get myself involved in and never have time to really focus on the important things.
So at the beginning it’s like we need to narrow our activities down. Then it seems a bit easier to integrate our spirituality into those things.
Thanks for the nudge Andrea and I’m sure this has helped many others!
Love and Light,
Nicolette
Just came across this blog and comments and it is the situation I am working through. Some time ago after going through some trials I realized that I needed to change. I have changed my personal life. I work in the corporate world and I changed my intentions at work and try to help others when I can. This helped but then again I realize I need to do more. Right now I am realizing that I may not be in the right place due to the hours and stress levels. Again thanks again for the blog and all of the comments from everyone!
