Do you ever find yourself thinking or saying things such as “I can’t believe that …†or “This should/shouldn’t be happening These are some of the ways we argue with reality. We “can’t believe†we didn’t get that job. We “should have†gotten that promotion. These thought patterns attempt to avoid the reality we have created. They are our mind, resisting what IS.
Not only is arguing with our reality a complete waste of mental energy, but it also prevents us from witnessing our life circumstances as the vital information they represent. Every circumstance in our lives is simply a reflection of ourselves. Our reality is information, plain and simple. It is not “good†or “bad.†Those are labels that we create about our reality. Our reality in itself just IS.
When our mind starts living in the “should,†all that valuable information contained in our reality goes out the window. We start removing ourselves from our creation, rather than taking responsibility for it. And in removing ourselves from our position as Creator, we also remove ourselves from power. Eventually, we become the hapless victims of circumstance. Most of us are somewhere in between empowerment and victimization – we take responsibility only when we create what we want.
Many of us are terrified to look our reality squarely in the eye and learn about ourselves based on what we’ve created. We’re scared that our reality may reflect what we don’t want to see. Maybe we’ll find that we’re not actually ready to receive love, or abundance, or success. So we retreat into the “should†where we can tell ourselves whatever we want, in spite of our life circumstances. We rail against what IS, because we’re doing all the right things. We’re leaving no stone unturned, we’re working hard, we’re putting ourselves out there. Why, oh why, are we not creating what we want?
Because we are energetic beings, far more complex than our conscious mind can possibly grasp. We are little radio stations, sending our energetic frequencies constantly. Our reality reflects those energies perfectly. Our conscious mind, caught in the vast divide between what it understands and what IS, employs an age-old survival mechanism: denial. It creates its own little reality of “shoulds†and “if only’s†and “I can’t believe’s.†This works until our actual reality smacks us in the head with life’s big stick. We may try to argue with reality, but in the end, reality tends to win that argument every single time.
If we’re happily in love, it’s a reflection of our energetic state of being.
If we’re miserably lonely, it’s a reflection of our energetic state of being.
If we’re raking in serious money, it’s a reflection of our energetic state of being.
If we can’t pay the rent, it’s a reflection of our energetic state of being.
If we’re in perfect health, it’s a reflection of our energetic state of being.
Our reality is information. We can use that information to shift our perception beyond what the conscious mind is able to grasp. It tells us what hidden programs may lie buried in our energetic state of being. Our reality tells us where we need to expand our awareness. Our reality also tells us of our greatest gifts.
Let’s not argue with it.
Blessings,
Andrea

Andrea, you’ve inspired me to sculpt this thought form:
I find that when I impose my will on my world, when my way of doing becomes compulsive, even to a point where I get lost in a cloud of should and must, I lose touch with the reality of my own co-creative signals, and to the extent to which I lose touch with the reality of my co-creative energies and results, is the extent to which I reinforce the habit of imposing my will on my world. I now see this circular dynamic as a necessary cycle for my learning and growth, but one which I need not stay locked into. As I grow and mature more fully into my Authentic Self, I find that I am more able to take responsibility for this dynamic and be a steward to my best co-creative efforts to attract and manifest all manner of love, success, and abundance.
A beautifully, thoughtfully articulated post, as always.

Shoulda, Coulda Woulda. That’s what my brother used to say to me whenever I would start whining about something that went wrong. It turned out to be good advice because now I just turn the other cheek and move on. Great post!
Life is a perfect mirror. I forget who said that the physical universe never lies but that is an accurate reflection of what happens.
It is good to examine our choices when we don’t like what we are experiencing. Fighting it just brings us more of the same. I find acceptance to be a good neutral place before summoning the intention to change.
Thank you, Christopher. It is an interesting phrase “imposing my will upon the world.” We can definitely get locked into that, as you describe, and it oddly enough separates us from our true power, doesn’t it? We don’t really have to work so hard – the world will effortlessly reflect our state of Being back to us. Of course, if we’re struggling or battling with the world – having to impose ourselves – then that is reflected, too. I love your phrase “be a steward” – love that! As if the ego serves to shepherd the expression of our Higher Self.
Steve – “shoulding” ourselves retrospectively is never a good idea. Still, rather than moving on sometimes it’s a great idea to look at what we’ve created in the meantime.
Tom – We’re so on the same page! I think I actually wrote an article on this blog once that was called “Acceptance before Change.” So true!
Blessings,
Andrea
Reality is the background on which we have to work. If we don’t like the backdrop we can always add colors/pictures etc. as per our taste to make it likable or at least agreeable. It is pointless to close our eye and feign that the world does not exist. It does not protect you to bury your head, it endangers your existence.
I love your comparison of us being like little radio stations, sending out our energetic frequencies. Isn’t that ever true (although I forget it sometimes). What kind of energetic state are we in? And if it’s a low energy stat – then why is that? Probably because it’s something that is not in alignment with our true self – and with our reality. Andrea, this is really a great piece on how our energetic states play into our reality.
