Before we can act as the powerful creators of our human experience, there’s one thing we absolutely must do.
Decide.
We have to decide what we want to create. Until we decide, nothing can be created – not by us, nor by the responsive, supportive Universe we live in. Until we decide what we want, we’re really just dabbling with both our power and our responsibility to create our physical life experience.
Deciding on what we want – absolutely, unequivocally stating our intention and will to the Universe – is not something we’re always comfortable with. Often, we prefer to wait and see what unfolds before we decide. We allow our life circumstances to determine what is possible for us. We wait for other people to make up their minds before we make up our own. We bargain – if this or that occurs THEN I’ll decide what I want.
We give our power and our responsibility away because we are fairly terrified of both.
Making decisions can be daunting, especially when we have no idea how we will create what we want. So we wait for our path to reveal itself before we take a single step. We hold off on making a decision until we have all our ducks in a row. Unfortunately, our little ducks only show up when we decide. And so we find ourselves creating absolutely nothing but wishful thinking.
There may be some objections coming up for you to this way of thinking. “But isn’t sometimes the reality that a decision isn’t ours to make? Don’t we sometimes have to wait for a situation to evolve a bit more so that we can make a more informed decision? Don’t we sometimes need our families or our business partners to get on board with our decision?â€
Actually, no. That would be a reactive way of living. It may at first glance seem very risky to decide our intent and expect people and events to fall into alignment with what we want. But it is actually far riskier not to decide, and to create nothing at all. It is far riskier to let life simply happen to us.
There are definitely times when we have to wait to take action. But making a decision about what we want is always and immediately available to us.
The Universe moves and shows us our path as soon as we decide where we want to go.

I’m really digging this insight:

Deciding has a way of clearing out many — or at least simplifying some — of the tangential opportunities and options that might normally come at us as a result of other people’s decisions.
There is definitely some organic dance, back-and-forth, moving in response to movement. What I’m hearing is “Take the Lead.”

Well I can sure relate to this. I went through quite a spell of indecision.
All the anguish and guilt over not making decisions you know you should, seems laughable once you do decide and take the first action.

The thing that stops me from being decisive is the mental chatter. All the guilt, worries, fears actually stop the moment I muster enough courage to tell it to shut up and just do as I say, LOL! Mustering that courage to make a decision (especially a big, life-changing one) does take a lot energy though, but it gets better with practice. I wouldn’t say I’m really as decisive as I should be, but I hope I’m getting there.
You have offered a different perspective of things. My problems with making a decision often lie in that I’m not clear in what I want yet. So I’m stuck in the fear from making the wrong decisions and preferring to wait for things to unfold just a little more. I guess “nothing ventured, nothing gained”. Perhaps it’s time for me to put my foot down, make a decision and go for it!
Great post, we do need to decide what we want. Creating what we want is another issue that often takes time. Working according to The Manifestation Wheel is a great way to align our wants with the Universe and then take action.
Lately I’ve realized that I thought I had decided but really I hadn’t. I had decided and committed only so far and that wasn’t far enough. I needed to back up my decisiveness with more exactness and preciseness. in order to help the Universe along more. Making clear decisions leads to focus and then action. I found that by being indecisive I was betting on too many horses to win the race.
I like this post. The problem is I’m 36 years old and still have no idea what I want to create. I let all of my fears keep me boxed in. I totally relate with the idea of having to have “ducks in a row”. I’m always waiting for this and it seems that they are never in a row. Thus, I’m in a constant limbo. I don’t ever feel like I’m fully committed to anything.

Just accept that you will never get all your ducks in a row. As they say, “every journey starts with a single step”. Everything does not have to be in place for us to start creating what we want.
And age is no issue, I landed in min life mission at a much higher age than yours.
A very timely post. I was just considering two very different paths to take. And I’ve found myself floundering between the two instead of making a concrete decision about where I am going and committing myself.
My favorite little decision maker when I can\’t decide is to simple as what the next most obvious thing to do is, and then do it. It works like a charm. It really can end a big chunk of inaction and indecision.
Slade – Oh, I’m such a fan of taking the lead! If we don’t, who or what will?
John – I agree that a decision can come as such a relief! Even if we later discover that a new decision is necessary, I’d rather make a choice – any choice – than hang about in limbo!
Irene – You know, I think the mind loves indecision so much because it keeps the mind so entertained. We can turn over one possibility, then the other, weigh options, think and think and think. No wonder the mind doesn’t want the fun to end! That’s why it takes up so much mental energy – indecision actually strengthens the mind and ego, I think.
Evelyn – I guess the question is whether there is such a thing as a “wrong” decision? I love the saying “There is no failure, only unexpected outcomes.” Sometimes those unexpected outcomes lead to amazing results or incredible growth.

Tom – Thank you for sharing that insight. I think you’ve hit upon something – we take a step or two and then wait for a result, rather than staying with the intent.
Sean – I bet you have plenty of ideas! It’s sometimes easier to tell ourselves we don’t know, rather than committing to something. Just pick one thing – as Tom Stine says, the next most obvious thing!
I agree with Bengt, too. The ducks are never in a row. I usually work however I’m inspired and then I get to marvel at how the ducks line up in hindsight. When I look at how my business has evolved over the past two years, it looks like there was a plan – but it definitely wasn’t MY plan. I’m just not that well-organized! So act now, worry about the ducks later.
Ned – So glad this was timely! Pick one and you may find that what looked like two different paths end up coming together in the end. It’s funny how we sometimes think we’d be closing the door on an opportunity by picking a different path, but that’s just our lack mentality talking. In reality, we end up receiving so much more than what we thought we would when we decide!
Tom – I love that! Especially the “then do it” part. I’m a big fan of decisions, and an even bigger fan of taking action.

I made a decision (I thought a clear decision) about a problem I’ve been having but the Universe is not responding to my intention. I’m getting peeved.
As non-Buddhist and non-Reiki as this may be (I am not Buddhist but am a recovering Catholic and do practice Reiki), I intended to create a mouse-free house for some time now but the Universe seems intent to create a mouse FULL house for me. So not cool!
Frankly, I’ve been trying to exterminate the buggers for some time and have limited had success but I have stragglers, perhaps psychic vampire mice (?) who have attached themselves to my house. I thought I was clear deciding that the mice should leave but it isn’t working. Surely I must be doing something wrong!
Perhaps my intention to kill the mice is not aligned with my highest path? I dunno. I hope that’s not the case. I openly admit I want the mice to die but I know killing is wrong. Conundrum.
I am not scared of mice (no girlie freak outs here) but since I decided to put my house up for sale, I think it’s likely that a potential home buyer might not appreciate the presence of vermin in my casa.
I have been thinking that perhaps my intention to rid the house of mice in order to sell it was not clear enough considering I am not sure if selling the house at this time is in alignment with my financial state.
And I ponder……………decisions, decisions…UGH!
My Reiki instructor thinks I manifested the mice! E-X-C-U-S-E MOI? I created the mice infestation (ok, perhaps not an infestation but it’s more than one)???? Pulease. Why would I do that?
I plan to have a conscious talk with my sub-conscious and super-conscious later to iron this all out once and for all. oy-veh!

Of course, easy enough for me to say looking on. (Ha!) But it’s ringing a BIG, FAMILIAR bell for me, because I catch myself in that stuff (some part of me needing to see the path before I can commit to my intent) quite frequently.
Maybe some part of you is not quite on board with the idea of selling your house and all the change that will mean in your life? That, in my experience, is enough to send mixed messages to the Universe (which, darn it, is quite obedient) and might explain why Mickey and Company are still uninvited guests in your home.
Andrea, I know I’m guilty of taking a step or two, then waiting for (and even getting!) a result, and then not getting back to taking steps quick enough. But, I’m learning, and getting better all the time.

Yeah, I think I have a mixed message issue for sure. I’ll need to DECIDE which direction I want to take. The Clash song “Should I Stay or Should I Go” keeps repeating in my mind over and over again. *stop the madness*
Security, financial freedom and independence are important values in my life. Moving now may jeopardize both. I still don’t know how Mickey and pals fit in to the picture (and if my Reiki chick is right about me inviting them in I’m gonna be peeved – LOL).
Today ushers in a new sunrise, fresh air and an opportunity for me to work on my goals and fine tune some things.

Christa, I’m afraid I have to agree with your Reiki gal. We either create and attract ALL of it, or we’re just hapless victims of life circumstance. I prefer the first version … which means you somehow attracted Mickey and pals!
Okay, so here’s the question: Energetically, what is this infestation creating in your life? If you had to sum it up in one word or short phrase, what do your unwanted guests represent to you?

Energetically the infestation makes me anxious.
Mickey & pals represent disease & magnify a lack of control over my environment.
Boy oh boy Andrea, you have a great gift of making my noodle work!
Dare I ask: what do I do now?
Christa, that’s great! Now you know the energetic vibrational qualities that attracted the mice. Thank the mice for their service, because they’ve been wonderful teachers that showed up as the physical manifestation of those vibrations present within your state of Being.
Now all you have to do is shift out of those vibrations. If they aren’t within you, they can’t show up in your environment. Therefore the mice will have to go.
Instead of anxiety, disease, and lack of control, you need to be in the vibrational states of peace, well-being, and knowing that you are perfectly supported by the Universe. That may sound really difficult, but it doesn’t have to be! Go read my latest article, it gives you some really concrete ideas on how to consciously shift your vibrational state. You already have the awareness – that’s the hardest part. Next is just consciously putting yourself in the state you desire for yourself.
