Acting on Divine Guidance

I’m often asked “How do I know that I’m really acting on intuitive guidance? How do I know I’m not just making it up?” Until we become familiar with the still, inner voice of our intuition, I believe that the “proof” is to be found in the experience of taking action on the guidance we receive.

Our Spirit Guides will never point us towards a next step that we truly don’t enjoy. Intuitive guidance doesn’t send us towards suffering! But, having said that, we have to actually take action before we can truly appreciate the quality of the information we’ve been given.

Here’s a personal example. My Spirit Guides have been pointing me towards Toastmasters for a while now. Toastmasters is an organization that supports its members in developing their public speaking skills. The thing is, I loathe public speaking. At least, I used to loathe public speaking, which seems strange for a former opera singer, right? While I was comfortable getting on stage and singing music that someone else had written, putting my own words out there in front of people used to terrify me. And I certainly teach a lot of classes – but on the phone, which is far less intimidating to me. So was I happy about receiving guidance to go and join Toastmasters? Heck, no! But I went, because I just can’t ignore intuitive guidance.

I arrived to my first meeting early – only to found out that it had started an hour earlier than I thought, so I was actually terribly late! I caught about the last ten minutes of that meeting. At the end of those whopping ten minutes, the Chapter President asked for volunteers to speak at the next meeting. And wouldn’t you know it, but my little hand just shot up in the air as if of its own volition! So there I was, scheduled to speak with exactly ten minutes worth of prior experience under my belt.

My first speech was yesterday. It was a blast. I had an absolutely fabulous time speaking. Yes, I was nervous. Oddly enough, I was not terrified. I had an amazing experience – completely different from any prior experience I’ve had in public speaking. I learned so much about myself! What made me comfortable was that I was now speaking from a place of authenticity. So much of what I’ve been doing in the past year or so – blogging, teaching classes, and even just talking with my clients – has been about uncovering my authentic self-expression. Go figure – now public speaking is fun. I can’t wait to go and teach some live workshops to promote my book.

Act on the guidance you receive! Even if you are not sure that it is guidance at first – take a leap of faith. Don’t prejudge, because what may sound difficult or scary may turn into a wonderful experience. If you truly have a miserable time in the moment of action itself, you know that it was not guided. But you won’t know until you actually take action. So try it once. Let the quality of the action inform you of whether it was truly Divinely guided action – or just your mind, coming up with its own ideas. In time, you will learn to recognize the difference.

Divine guidance may challenge us, may take us out of our comfort zone, and may take us towards something we think we will not enjoy. But in the moment of acting on Divine guidance, we will feel pretty good! There’s no way to know until we take action. So if there’s been something lurking in the back of your head, something you’ve been considering but haven’t had the nerve to act on – do it. The experience may surprise you, and open up new worlds of possibility.

Blessings,
Andrea Hess

Andrea, I applaud you for taking such a bold step! I’ve too joined Toastmasters recently and have yet to take that leap (of volunteering to speak).

I think my intuition is a bit sluggish. :) Your experience has inspired me though. Thank You!

Hi, Z – I hope you take the plunge! It really was far more fun than I ever imagined. They really are a terrific organization, I’ve found my chapter to be very open and supportive so far.

Blessings,
Andrea

Great article Andrea! I did my first Toastmasters session last night so funny that you motion it here (that synchronicity thingy again).

I felt a strong impulse to join about three weeks back. I know absolutely that it will play an important role in the next phase of my journey. I wish you the best with your group and I’d love to share stories about our speeches.

“Divine guidance may challenge us, may take us out of our comfort zone, and may take us towards something we think we will not enjoy”.

It is a bit scary indeed being pushed out of our comfort zone, yet at the same time its exile rating to ponder where we may be heading!

Namaste,

Andrea, it sounds like a wonderful experience. What did you talk about?

Congratulations, Andrea! Thanks for sharing your experience and inspiring us to have the courage to follow through on the guidance we receive.

I used to be a university lecturer, so my public speaking experience started as quite a trial by fire, speaking to about 500 students at a time, about 2 or 3 times a day. They were very honest in their feedback!! Luckily, as I progressed, the feedback got more positive :) . Overall, it was an amazing experience, and one from which I grew tremendously.

I can’t wait for you to be out there teaching workshops… any chance of a tour to the UK?!

PS: Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone! I’ve been celebrating love today (Surely not a coincidence that my spam word was “love”!!).

First of all, congratulations on getting comfortable wth public speaking. It’s a lot of fun!

And …”If you truly have a miserable time in the moment of action itself, you know that it was not guided.”

That’s just it…feelings are the key to knowing whether your action is on track. Actions that are guided have that intense “flow” feeling to them, while actions that lead us away from our path feel like a struggle and a burden.

Yes you bold, wonderful speaker! I’m happy for you. I’ll bet our were glowing. Your progression of self-expression is interesting to follow.

Question. You start off the post talking about intuitive guidance and finish referring to Divine Guidance. Isn’t all joyful guidance Divine? If that’s the case what about these (so far silent, at least to me) spirit guides? What’s the advantage to communicating with them? Did I read one of your earlier posts where you shared a distinction on these kinds of guidance?

I’m really looking forward to your response. Here’s why. I confess for reasons of income I’ve been engaging in not so joyful action some of the time. Even though I blog on delightful work; I haven’t yet reached the frequency of joy that you inspire me to.

Patricia – I justed talked about the odd career path to becoming a professional psychic – not really something I planned on in high school or college! :-)

Mags – What an awesome amount of experience! I’m sure it will serve you well, no matter where your career takes you. Glad you got “love” today from my blog!

Kirsten – feeling “flow” is the perfect way to describe it. It may not be entirely comfortable mentally, but there is a sense of ease about these experiences. Great point, thank you!

Tom – Well, I did only say I had a blast – I have no idea what the audience thought! :-) But they had to sit through it, hee hee.

You are totally correct – it’s all Divine Guidance. Our intuition comes from our Higher Self, which is the Divine (and not at all separate!) part of us. Intuition also comes from our Spirit Guides, who are also guiding us from their most Divine perspective, because they are serving Spirit by serving us … because of course we are all Divine Spirit. Both communication from our Guides and our Higher Self falls under “intuition” in my book. The benefit of having Guides is that they have additional Soul-level perspectives based on their own spiritual development.

I hope that answers the question! Regarding work – you are already “tuned in” to joy, it comes through in your writing and your voice. It’s just a matter of aligning fully with those frequencies – and you will!!! I personally can’t wait to see it unfold.

Blessings,
Andrea

Michael – somehow your comment got lost in the moderation queue, and I just found and rescued it!

I’m glad you’re enjoying Toastmasters – it really is a great group! I’d definitely love to hear how it goes for you.

I think there is something very transformational to speaking up, being heard … I think it challenges us in the areas of self-expression, certainly. Anyway, there’s a lot to be gained through the organization!

Blessings,
Andrea
