The big milestone moments of our spiritual development journey are without doubt the major shifts in consciousness or spiritual awakenings that we are occasionally blessed with. We go on a retreat, take a workshop or a class, or perhaps work with a healing arts practitioner, and suddenly our whole perspective is different. We are more ourselves – more conscious, more aligned with our purpose, more enlightened. We feel ready to take on the world!

And then we take our new-found shift in consciousness out into the world. All our bliss may quickly evaporate as we try to maintain our new state of awareness in our every day life, amongst our family, and in our workplace. We have trouble sleeping. We feel uncomfortable in our bodies. It is as if life doesn’t really “fit” anymore. Our spouse picks a fight with us. Our boss suddenly becomes unreasonable. Our children throw tantrums. It seems that all of life is conspiring against our growth. We may feel as if we’ve taken one step forward and two steps back.

What’s going on here?

When we undergo a shift in consciousness, we literally embody a different, higher energetic frequency from that moment forward. This feels really, really good initially. It is, in fact, what we are after in our journey of spiritual evolution. There are, however, several side-effects to this phenomenon that can be confounding unless we confront them consciously.

Our own physical body is not accustomed to this higher energetic vibration we now represent. It can go into energetic overload, unable to handle these higher frequencies that are now part of our being. And so we have trouble feeling comfortable or can’t sleep.

Our emotional and mental energy bodies may also be purging feelings and thought patterns that can no longer be maintained within our upgraded energy field. We may feel angry, or burst into tears at the drop of a hat. Old, worn-out beliefs may rise to the surface so that we may release them. Negative thought patterns will come up so that we may discard them. This can create emotional and mental upheaval. It may seem to us like we’re actually taking steps backward in our personal and spiritual development, rather than evolving.

Our shift in consciousness also challenges every single person in our lives to examine their own state of awareness. We attract people that are within a similar state of consciousness as ourselves. But now we have changed our state of being. Where there resonance, there is now dissonance. This is a healthy dissonance – it is how we inspire growth in each other. Our vibration will activate a higher resonance within those around us. But there may also be resistance present to this higher resonance, which may create conflict. And that energetic conflict may express itself as fights, drama, and negative quests for attention.

Finally, our external life circumstances need to shift and change to accommodate our new state of being. What served us even a few days ago may not serve us now. And until our inner changes have manifested themselves outwardly, it feels like our old life does not quite fit us anymore.

In a spiritual sense, we have outgrown our bodies, our emotions and thoughts, our loved ones, and our life circumstances. They must now adjust, or fall away. In the meantime, we must accept and appreciate that our spiritual evolution has created a state of energetic dissonance not only within ourselves, but between ourselves and our environment. Energetic rebalancing must occur. Until then, here are some tips for getting through this difficult period of adjustment:

  • Take a bath with a little sea salt and lavender in it. This clears your energy field.
  • Do some yoga. The physical practice of yoga is specifically designed to assist your body in holding a higher vibration rate.
  • Allow the storm of negative emotions and thoughts to pass without giving them too much importance. Observe them, bless them, and know that they are not who you truly are. Cry, or slam a few doors, without judging yourself.
  • Stay grounded by spending time in nature. Hug a tree. Bake some bread or cook a good meal. Get a massage. Drink lots and lots of water. Do some gardening, or arrange some flowers. Be very, very good to yourself.
  • Give friends and family plenty of space to have their own reactions to this new energetic quality that is suddenly in their lives. Hold a sacred space of non-judgment, and know that this will assist them in raising their own awareness in their own perfect time. Do not insist that they walk your path. Allow them to adjust in their own way.
  • There is no need to rearrange your life. Observe what is working, and what doesn’t seem to fit anymore. You will notice that what no longer matches your resonance falls away on its own. What supports your new state of awareness will magically be drawn into your life. You have already done your part. Allow the Law of Attraction to do its work in your life.

The weeks after a significant shift in consciousness can undoubtedly be challenging. When embraced with gentle awareness, however, we can continue to celebrate our new state of being even as we allow our life and loved ones to meet us on our path.
